Key Factors for Sustaining Change

To ensure that the positive changes made in forest conservation and sustainable development are not only maintained but also advanced, several crucial elements need to be in place.

1

Advocacy and Accountability

Empowering communities to demand accountability from local governments and monitor their sustainability commitments.

2

Rights Protection

Promoting and safeguarding human rights, land rights, and Indigenous rights to build equitable societies.

3

Legal Expertise

Equipping organizations with the expertise to pursue legal frameworks for sustainability and rights protection.

4

Research-Backed Policy

Supporting research-based initiatives to shape effective sustainability regulations at the local level.

Indonesia Landscape

Challenges and Opportunities

Indonesian civil society organizations, including national networks and local non-government organizations, face an array of systematic challenges that undermine their capability to drive change. These challenges include a lack of organizational capability, a lack of access to technical and scientific knowledge and expertise, and a lack of sustainable, especially unrestricted funding sources.

Local Issues and Areas of Focus

The challenges faced by civil society organizations are particularly pronounced in Indonesia’s outer islands, where many locally significant issues remain unaddressed due to reliance on project-based and international funding

1

Mining Booms

The expansion of mining activities in Eastern Indonesia, especially for "green minerals" used in electric vehicle supply chains, poses significant environmental and social risks.

2

Sand Mining

In Nusa Tenggara Timur, unsustainable sand mining practices have detrimental effects on local ecosystems and communities.

3

Farming Systems and Climate Change

The adaptation of farming systems to the impacts of climate change is crucial for the resilience and sustainability of rural communities.

Kolibri Alliance aims to strengthen the individual capacity of grassroots Indigenous organizations to:

  • Conduct applied research on the topics of resilient, rural livelihoods, including piloting and refining effective models to support adaptation to climate change and conserving biodiversity and natural resources,
  • Strengthen their financial and administrative capacity, including managing projects,
  • Improve their technological knowledge and access to technology on the topic of resilient and profitable rural livelihoods,
  • Build a network for sharing lessons, knowledge, and experience across different geographies and
  • Build an alliance to improve fundraising for members and, ultimately, create a fund to ensure the strong financial capacity of the members.

Alliance for Civil Society

The Alliance aims to overcome the existing challenges faced by civil society organizations due to the following points:

  • Current funding modalities do not provide resources to organizations that can advocate for political and policy change, or funding is not provided to address critical local issues
  • Support to communities is provided on an ad hoc project basis rather than through ongoing support.
  • It is challenging for local organizations to fundraise by themselves for topics that are important to their local communities.
